Norway lifts Nordic gender equality

For the first time ever a Nordic country has reached full gender equality in the Nordic Labour Journal’s gender equality barometer. The barometer reflects the gender balance in 24 different positions of power in the Nordic societies. After a change of government last autumn, Norway has now reached 22 points. 20 points is needed for full gender equality.

Refugees’ chances of getting to the Nordic countries have been dramatically reduced. Before the tightening of rules, more than 170,000 people applied for asylum in a Nordic country. Even if nany of the new arrivals will be turned down, the region will still get a solid boost of labour. Can refugees be included in working life without lowering wages and risking the creation of a new economic underclass?

The house on the borderline

Some 40,000 individuals commute between Sweden and Norway. For the purpose of assisting the commuters, a “Border Service” was established one year ago at Morokulien, between Kongsvinger in Norway and Arvika in Sweden. The “Border Service” offers guidance to which rules apply in each country, and shows one result of a unique cooperation between the county employment services in both countries.
