New Danish legislation to tackle social dumping on construction sites

Bigger fines and immediate shutdowns of construction sites. These are tools that the Danish parliament has granted the Danish Working Environment Authority to fight social dumping in the construction sector, which employs a rising number of immigrant workers who sometimes put their own lives at risk.

  • Researchers from Aalborg University have spent two years interviewing 86 migrant workers from 13 countries, all of them construction workers in Denmark.
  • They also interviewed 37 trade union representatives.
  • The project also includes analyses of registry data regarding workplace accidents.
  • Based on this, the research project estimates that only about one in five workplace accidents involving migrant workers from new EU countries is registered.
