Increased unemployment in Lapland

The Corona crisis has led to nearly 11,000 job-losses in Lapland. 13.3% of the labour force has been furloughed or is without work. Finland’s average unemployment figure for October was 11.9%.

The tourism industry employed one in ten Laplanders. In Finland, only the Åland islands have more tourism workers.

Travel restrictions remain

The Finnish government believes the Corona pandemic will carry on growing globally. Travel restrictions into Finland, introduced in mid-December and covering 25 European countries, will therefore remain in place over Christmas and New Year until mid-January.

Some exceptions are being made for around ten countries with low infection rates, as well as for Sweden and Norway in the north.

Travel into Schengen is covered by EU regulations, which means most major Asian countries are excluded. Workers from Sweden and Estonia are allowed to commute to jobs in Finland without going into quarantine for 10 days. The government has warned against any Christmas travel in Finland.
