Vaasa has around 67,000 citizens and is Finland’s 14th biggest city. It is situated on the Finnish west coast, in the Ostrobothnia region. Across the Gulf of Bothnia lies Swedish Umeå and Örnsköldsvik (in Västerbotten County).
- The city is bilingual. The Finnish-speaking majority is growing and is currently at 67%, yet the Swedish People’s Party of Finland is the biggest on the city council.
- Vaasa is being marketed as an international city. Unemployment is close to the Finnish average at 8%. The energy technology sector is the largest employer.
- In October, Vaasa got the nickname “The involuntary corona capital of Finland”. Covid-19 has mainly spread through student parties at the city’s university and colleges.
