Estonian labour missing in the construction industry

The Finnish construction industry and health sector have made good use of foreign labour for a long time, especially from Estonia. Many Estonians were forced to choose as Finland cut back on ferry crossings, closed borders and introduced quarantine.

The construction industry asked Estonian workers to stay in Finland and carry on working. Many projects have now been forced to stop because of a lack of workers or of money.

Trade unions point out that unemployment will rise in the coming months – construction sites ought to be able to find some Finnish labour. Many also say that construction activity will naturally fall during the economic crisis which is coming.
