Protect the trust!

"Trust did not create the welfare state, but the welfare state could not exist without trust." That is one of many ways of describing how important trust is to the Nordic model. Other countries look to the Nordic region for inspiration and study how we organise the labour market. But trust could also be a boss giving employees the power to run the business, and using working hours for other things than attending staff meetings. That is the case at the City of Copenhagen's libraries (above). Here customers are trusted to let themselves in any time of day.

The psychosocial working environment in the Nordic region is changing as a result of big changes and increasing demands at work. Warning bells are sounding over rising levels of sick leave and more measures are being put in place to turn the trend. Employees who feel they have little control over their own working situation are particularly exposed. Gender equality in war and peace

Positions of power are still being conquered for the first time by Nordic women; Denmark has got its first female head of the confederation of trade unions. Some obvious black spots remain – Sweden has never had a female prime minister, while Norway has never had a female foreign minister. But the one position of power no woman has yet held is commander-in-chief.
