Board game injects creativity into medical technicians

There is growing interest in the way industrial designers work, and design ideas are entering into more and more areas. The ability to create processes, focus on customers and to think outside the box fuels the interest among big and small companies.

Great interest in industrial design

Design is a growth area and in later years several new design disciplines have emerged. Industrial design has changed too and today industrial designers develop both goods and services, even if the work process remains the same. It is not clear exactly how many industrial designers are active in Sweden today, but it could be around 4,500 people - although many call themselves ‘formgivare’ (designers) and focus mainly on physical shapes.

Many want to train to become industrial designers and the threshold to get into the most popular courses is high. It is often crucial to be able to show a portfolio. Today six universities offer courses in industrial design, but there is no clear border between an artistic education, technical education and market communication.

Unemployment among designer graduates who work on development projects is low, and the labour market tends to become more and more international.

The interest for industrial design varies. Today the interest in services is growing and the health care sector is an important employer of industrial designers.
