The work to remove border obstacles is central to the Nordic cooperation. At the June 2007 meeting of Nordic prime ministers in Punkaharju, Northern Finland, a Freedom of Movement Forum was established to work with clearing away border obstacles in the Nordic region.
The Forum is headed by a chairperson, presently Ole Norrback, together with the Secretary General for the Nordic Council of Ministers.
The Forum was initially meant to work for three years, but has had its mandate extended until 2013
It might seem a simple question, but the definition of a family varies not only between the Nordic countries but also within the countries depending on which piece of legislation you are looking at. Finish social legislation, for instance, uses the 'refrigerator principle' to determine who belongs to a family. People who live together and use the same fridge are defined as one family.
A separated parent with custody of a child but who does not live in the same household as the child is not a family member, according to Finnish social legislation.
Civil legislation defines a family differently.
